What is a makerspace?

A makerspace is a place to create. Makerspaces range from a shared room in someone's apartment to multi-story office complexes with machine shops, sewing rooms, art studios, business incubators and more. The thing that all makerspaces have in common is providing somewhere where people can go to work on creating things in a shared physical space.

The Beaver Dam Makerspace Project aims to create an environment which encourages creativity and collaboration across many forms and mediums. Technology, software, hardware, electronics, arts & crafts, music, film, performance, machining, carpentry, entrepenurship and all other forms of creative activity are candidates for what the space will be designed to facilitate; the initial list of activities and resources will simply be defined by those in the community who are using it.

So what's next?

The next step for the project is to find out if there is enough interest in the community to support a makerspace. More than money, a makerspace needs makers, hackers, crafters, artists and more to fill its space and keep it busy, so we need to find out how many people in Beaver Dam and the surrouding communities are interested in having a space like this as part of their community.

How can I help?

Right now you can express your interest in the project by joining our mailing list and visiting our other pages on Facebook, Twitter and Google+. Send us an email, Like, Follow or +1 us and let us know why you'd like to see a makerspace in Beaver Dam and when & how you would use it!

Next you can attend Damcamp; a Barcamp-inspired Unconference to be held at Wayland Academy on March 24, 2012 (you can read more about Barcamps and Unconferences at Wikipedia). DamCamp is a daylong event and we encourage attendees to present on any topic they like to talk about. We've even started a Google Moderator where you can post your ideas for a session and vote on session ideas you'd like to encourage others to present.

Finally, once we've proven that Beaver Dam is the right place for a makerspace and we open our doors you can contribute through the more traditional means of time, talent and treasure.

Who's behind this?

The Beaver Dam Makerspace Project is currently lead by Jason J. Gullickson and a small group of Beaver Dam community members. If you'd like to join the team please contact us and let us know how you'd like to contribute to the project.
